Mock Legislators Learn About State Government

By Kathy Porter

Mikaela Silva of Rich County was among several high school age 4-H members from across the state of Utah that attended Mock Legislature. Mock Legislature is held under the direction of the State 4-H Ambassadors and their Advisor, Craig Dart. It was held at the Utah State Capitol building in the House Chambers.
The The event included:
  • Guest speakers that present ideas and encourage youth to get involved now.
  • Lessons on the legislative process
  • Committee meetings to hear the bills being presented
  • A tour of the Capitol building
  • Open debate over the 15 bills that the youth present in the actual House Chambers
This is a great opportunity for youth to actually present bills and debate them from the floor. It helps them to understand how Bills become a law. They are the next generations of leaders.

Daniels Scholar Recipients

Austin Groll and Alec Silva,

Rich County Daniels Scholar Recipients
By Kathy Putnam

Character, leadership, and service!  These are the core values that define a Daniels Scholar.  Knowing Austin Groll and Alec Silva like so many of us do, I feel this is just a start of a list of their strong qualities.

The Daniels Scholarship Program distinguishes itself by selecting young leaders of exceptional character with the desire to give back to their communities.

Bill Daniels defined the specific criteria and unique perspective used to select Daniels Scholars. In addition to overall character,  natural leaders with the motivation to succeed and the potential to be engaged in the community.

From the thousands that apply, roughly 250 young people from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming are awarded scholarships each year.  In 2013 Utah received 16 of the scholarships awarded.  It is amazing that 2 of the 16 receipients from Utah were 4-H members from Rich County.  Congratulations to Austin Groll and Alec Silva for the opportunity you have earned to be the receipients of such an amazing, life changing scholarship.

The Daniels Scholarship is a four-year scholarship that applies toward the expenses of attaining a bachelor’s degree at any nonprofit, accredited college or university in the United States.

The Daniels Scholarship provides it’s Scholars with resources, encouragement, and inspiration far beyond the financial assistance to help them earn a college degree. Scholars are connected to a wide range of like-minded peers, and mentors.

I would like to thank the families of Austin Groll and Alec Silva for helping them set high expectations with emphasizes on personal accountability. Austin Groll is son of Shawn and April Groll and Sherry Groll.  Alec is son of Dusty and Brandee Mills.  Both families are local Rich County 4-H Leaders!

If you want to become a dragon whisperer there is a great series of books for you to read.

It may come in handy if the Bear Lake Monster ever appears.

How to Train Your Dragon, the Heroic Misadventures of Hiccup the Viking as told to

Caessida Cowell, Little Brown Company.   Ages 9 and up

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third was son of the chief. He was the hope and heir to the tribe of the Hairy Hoaligions. He first had to pass the Dragon Initiation Program. If you didn’t pass you would be exiled. Poor Hiccup caught a rather small, toothless dragon. Soon he gained the title of “Hiccup the Useless and his dragon, Toothless.”  He found that the best way to train his dragon was to be kind and loving. “We can’t get away with being bigger and more violent than everybody else anymore. IMAGINATION, that is was they need and what you’ve got.”  (61). He became, Hiccup the Useful.

If dragons aren’t your thing, how about becoming a Ranger’s Apprentice?  In the book series, Ranger’s Apprentice you can learn how to be a spy for the king in medieval times. The first book, The Ruins of Gorlan, you are introduced to Will a castle ward, dropped off as a baby he had imagined his father to be a great knight, killed in battle. He dreamed of becoming a knight but was chosen to be the ranger’s apprentice. Rangers scared Will with their mysterious ways. They were expert archers who hid in the shadows.  In this action packed book many battles are fought, enemies become friends and Will finds out the true hero that his father was. This book is by John Flanagan and is for ages 11 and up.

Letter To The Editor

Letter to the Editor:

The last two RCT issues have had articles stating the County and Garden City may have to increase some fees to become in line with other counties and communities. The problem I see is those comparisons were made against larger populated counties and communities with higher incomes than those of Rich county. Because we have lower incomes any increases in taxes or fees will have a bigger impact on our budgets.

So, I hope our elected officials will take a long hard look at how the residents will be affected before they increase our taxes directly or indirectly with fees, simply to put their wants in line with other counties and communities.

A concerned resident,

Randall Knight

Death By Chocolate

Heritage Theatre / 2505 South Highway 89 / Perry, Utah

Death by Chocolate (The Play) -- April 19 - May 11, 2013 7p.m.

Matinee April 27, Nick Noir, private eye, has fallen on hard times. His botched last case has cost him whatever jobs may have come his way. Now he’s at the end of his rope. A call from Coco Purvis offers a tantalizing case that just might pay off for Nick. Coco and her sister, Bonbon, run Precious Perks Coffee Shoppe, which is known for its signature drink, Death by Chocolate. Unfortunately, the name came all to true for a fellow named Vinne the Leech who died while drinking it a month earlier. Now, business has fallen off and the shop might have to close unless somebody figures out what happened to Vinnie. A second murder and a disappearance complicate matters even more. Nick weaves his way through a lot of false deductions, but it all clicks just as a third murder is about to be committed.
