Cougar Mauls Horse

GARDEN CITY, Utah. June 4, 2018. This last Wednesday a horse in a corral near Sweetwater Hillside was mauled by a cougar. The horse's wounds have been treated and it is expected to survive. The next evening the horse's owner heard the cows grazing in a nearby field become agitated and noisy so he went out to see if the cougar had returned.  It was dark but he did see what he believed to be the cougar.  There have been cougar sightings in the area now for over a year.

Scott Tolentino, Division of Wildlife Resources, has been notified.  Tollentino said that the State Conservation Officer has been notified and will watch for it.  He said it was rare for a mountain lion (cougar) to come into the city but that they are taking it seriously.

Tolentino said that if confronted with a cougar do not run.  Make a lot of noise and face the lion.  Do not turn away.  Make yourself as big as possible and back away slowly.
