Just a Little Bear Lake History by C.T. Buttars

 Did You Know…

…The first two names of Laketown were:  “Last Chance” and “Ethica”.  Later, in 1864, it became known as Laketown. (Ref: Elizabeth P. Astle & Mary P. Stucki article, 1963)

…In 1880, it took 4-1/2 days to get from Centerville, Utah to St Charles, Idaho “driving” a team of horses pulling a large wagon.  In 2025, it takes 2 hours and 17 minutes “driving” a truck pulling a travel trailer.

…Some of the Bear Lake area was settled under the Homestead Act of 1862, originally established by President Abraham Lincoln.  Homestead certificates were granted by the Act, “To secure Homesteads to Actual Settlers on the Public Domain”.  Up to 160 acres could be granted under this act, providing certain requirements were met.  The certificate below for 80 acres granted to Alexander Sims Junior was signed by President William McKinley on 18 June 1901.

Obituary-Ted Davidson (Lived in Garden City for two years with his wife Carolyn Weston Davidson-Carolyn is the daughter of Marie Weston)

Ted (Theodore) Edward Davidson was born on July 21, 1937 in Evanston, Wyoming, the fifth child of Marion N. Davidson and Inez Elizabeth Hollingshead Davidson.

At the death of his Father when Ted was 12 years old, Ted went to live with an Uncle in Lyman, Wyoming. A year later he moved back to Evanston to live with Bernard and Jeanette Hopkinson. He graduated from Evanston High School in 1955. During his junior high and high school years he worked part time as a sweeper in the city library, mowed lawns, was a lifeguard at the city pool, a radio station disk jockey, a service station attendant, and at Blythe and Fargo. He attended his college freshman year in Laramie, Wyoming, and his sophomore year at BYU. He loved ROTC and basketball. He had played basketball in high school and later, after school with his fellow schoolteachers.

He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Eastern States Mission from 1957-1959, taking part in the Hill Cumorah Pageant for two productions.

Ted met Carolyn Weston before his mission and they married Dec 28, 1959 in the Logan Temple. On July 25, 1960 while working for the San Francisco Chemical Co as an underground phosphate miner, he accidentally slipped on a raise ladder and fell over 300 feet to the bottom. He was not expected to live, but miraculously survived with only minor injuries. He went back to BYU that fall with casts on his right hand and left leg.

Ted graduated from BYU in 1961. He began his teaching career in Randolph, Utah for two years, and continued with the Logan City School District for 38 years. Ted loved to teach and he loved being a student. He attended USU while teaching and earned a Masters Degree in Math in 1966, a Masters Degree in Education in 1974, and a PhD in Education in 1975. He taught students math at Logan Jr High and Logan High Schools. During this time he was a driver training instructor as well.

Ted was also employed during the summer for several years by the Forest Service, various construction firms and by Providence City. He occasionally worked for his Father-in-law on his ranches in Pickleville, Utah and Sage, Wyoming. He served as a Providence City Councilman during the time that Providence installed the sewer system.

Ted loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many callings: several bishoprics, High Council, Stake 70’s Quorum President, and with the young men as Cub Master and Scout Master. He was presented a Silver Beaver Award for his scouting contributions. After he retired he and his wife served in the LDS Employment Center, the Family History Center, and several years in the Temple.

Ted loved to fish and hunt with his sons, build, garden, travel and camp with his family.

Ted passed away March 22, 2025 at the age of 87, in Providence, Utah. Ted was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters (Inie and Vaye), 2 brothers (Marion and David) and a granddaughter (Kami). He is survived by 2 younger sisters (Francis and Darlene), a younger brother (Michal), his wife and 5 sons: Wes (Priscilla), Rob (Kim), Glenn (Kristy), Wayne, and Michael (Abigail). He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

For the last 6 months of his life, Ted resided at Cache Valley Assisted Living and Memory Care. His family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Primrose Hospice and Cache Valley Assisted Living and Memory Care for the kind care they offered to Ted.

Funeral arrangements are by Allen-Hall Mortuary with a viewing on Saturday March 22, 2025 from 10am-11:30am at the LDS Church at 309 South Main Street in Providence, with the funeral service following at 12:00 noon. Internment will be at the Providence Cemetery (925 River Heights Blvd, River Heights, UT).

March 2025 Updates

The project team has completed the design and permitting for construction at the marina site; however, the process of permitting borrowed material is still in progress.

Over the next 8-10 weeks, our team will continue monitoring the borrow source location for the presence of a state-sensitive species. Depending on the outcome of this monitoring, construction could begin as early as April or potentially be delayed until the Fall. We will learn more in the coming months and will share information as it becomes available.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate this critical aspect of the project.
