THE BEAUTY OF THE LAKE by C. T. Buttars

Even the rainclouds blend with the color of the lake!

A Little More Research on Hodges Ranch Article

C.T. Buttars did some research on the history published here on Hodges Ranch.  Below is the information.

I enjoyed the article on Hodges Ranch history.  It mentioned they didn't know the first name of Mr. Pickel, so I Googled a few sources.  "...Incorporated in 1935, the town was named for Charles C. Pickel, who is said to have been either an engineer who supervised the town's culinary water project, or a federal government official who helped secure funding for the project from the Public Works Administration".

Logan Canyon Construction Update 6-19-25

Construction Update | June 19, 2025

Crews installing fiber optic conduit along US-89 in Logan Canyon above the Logan River.

Upcoming Construction Activities

Crews will continue trenching for fiber conduit installation in the traffic lanes at the following locations:

  • Milepost (MP) 472.5 to 474.5 (near Right Hand Fork)
  • MP 484 to 487 (near SR-243)

This work includes rock saw excavation, allowing for precise material removal with minimal impact to surrounding structures.

Additionally, crews will perform milling on Monday.June 23 through Thursday, June 26 followed by paving operations between MP 485 to 487. Please drive with caution through the work zones.

Drivers can anticipate traffic delays and signalized one-way traffic at multiple locations throughout the project area.

Driver Safety Reminders: Use caution and prioritize safety while travelling through the construction area. Reduce speed, follow posted signage and be alert of crew members and equipment.

Project Overview

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is undertaking a project to install fiber optics cable in Logan Canyon. This fiber optic cable installation will improve broadband access in Logan Canyon, allowing for easier and more reliable community connection for Logan City, Garden City, and Beaver Mountain Resort. It will also strengthen and enhance communication capabilities, strengthen emergency service support and create opportunities for these communities to expand services and improve connectivity.

Work began in early May and will last approximately 18 months.

What to Expect

  • Daytime work Monday - Thursday, Friday 7 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Occasional weekend work
  • Winter shutdown with finish work through fall 2026
  • Moving operations throughout the canyon
  • One way traffic with temporary signals, at various locations
  • Delays are anticipated throughout the canyon
  • Noise, dust, and vibration
  • Heavy equipment, support vehicles, and crew members

CAUTION: Motorcyclists and cyclists

  • Uneven roadway surface in travel lanes

*Construction schedules and traffic impacts are subject to change

due to weather, utility, equipment and material delays.

History of Our Area: William Crawford Murder

An early figure in the cattle industry of the Bear River Valley was William Crawford, after whom the Crawford Mountains were named. Crawford opened a commercial packing house at Evanston in the early 1870s to supply meat to crews of the Union Pacific Railroad.

By 1872 he had joined forces with William Thompson and moved over five hundred head of cattle on the range east of Randolph. During the severe winter of 1876 virtually the entire herd perished.

During the ensuing years, Crawford and Thompson pooled their resources together with those of two other Evanston businessmen, E. S. Crocker and Harvey Booth. The four constructed the first irrigation canal from Bear River in 1878.

However, during the process of trying to determine the rights on the new canal, a misunderstanding developed between the foursome. William Crawford disappeared from a dance at Evanston in February 1893. Although his body was never recovered, it was assumed that he had been taken from Evanston and thrown in the burning slag heap at the mine at Almy. Two years later Harvey Booth was murdered in a barn belonging to the company. Neither murder was ever solved.124

Crocker was arrested for both murders.  He was at first convicted for killing Booth, but it overturned by a judge saying that there was too much prejudice in the area.  The trial was moved to Cheyenne and he was acquitted after the second trial.  The charge of the murder of Crawford was dismissed because they could not prove he was dead.

Cisco's Sonar - Utah Suckers

I enjoyed last week’s historical article on Utah suckers.  It always intrigues me how suckers could be so prized years ago but considered a “trash” fish today.  Years ago, I was told a story how fish saved a mountain man’s life.   A group of Shoshoni Indians had captured a trapper and were torturing him on the east shore of Bear Lake.  All of a sudden, schools of suckers amassed off the shore.  The Shoshoni immediately forgot about the captive and started catching suckers which was what they came to the lake for.  The hostage escaped thanks to the fish.

The Utah suckers arrived the latter part of May right on schedule.  They are ecstatic (not really because fish don’t have emotions) because much more of the rock lining of the inside of the marina is covered with water increasing spawning areas.  They cause a huge commotion during their spawning activity.  The males are black with yellow stripes and the females are dark brown.  The males change color and develop spawning tubercles (rough bumps along their sides) that aid in pressing against the female to eject eggs and milt.  Two males will come alongside a female near the shoreline and they will vibrate violently to release the eggs together at which point the fertilized eggs will sink in between the rocky substrate at the bottom.  Sometimes the fish will even flip up on shore out of the water.  The reason they need rocks is because right behind them is a hungry carp which sucks up the eggs immediately.  The suckers may also do the same thing.  In the spaces between the rocks Bear Lake sculpin also feed on the eggs.

They hatch within a week as larval fish, little more than a speck, and begin to provide food for the rest of the fish in the lake.  Probably less than one in a million eggs will make it to adult age but the population is stable.  Only large trout feed on adult suckers, there is unlimited food for them and most live for at least twenty years.  Their population is senescent (stable) with mortality equaling recruitment.

Suckers in other bodies of water, particularly reservoirs can be a problem but they evolved here in Bear Lake and are a vital part of the ecosystem.  They feed on invertebrates in the sediment that are not available to other fish and when they do they leave “pockmarks” in the bottom that provides cover for Bear Lake sculpin.  Just because they are ugly doesn’t make them bad.
