Johnson's donate to Garden City Library
Anita Weston, Reporter
Rich Civic Times
GARDEN
CITY,Utah. May 2019. At the beginning of the Town Council
Meeting, there was an opportunity to introduce
Jason and Jill Johnson and thank them for their generosity to the Garden
City Library.
Rhonda
Menlove has been serving on the Garden City Library Board. She noted that the library needed assistance
with technology resources in order to support the library operations and
provide adequate resources for patrons.
The current library technology tools, including computers, needed to be
replace and enhanced to ensure that the library maximizes its capacity to serve
the community and patrons well now and in the future.
There was also a need for a state-of-the-art
videoconferencing system to provide connection to resources and persons outside
of Garden City. Menlove was contacted
by a young couple, Jason and Jill Johnson, who have two small children. They asked if they could help the library by
giving a donation to the Garden City Library. They donated the sum of $8,237.12 to the
library. Some of the items that will be
purchased are listed below.
Five patron computers and monitors
Two staff computers
Updated software to be
purchased for all computers
A laptop computer to be purchased to support the new senior services program and for use
in the video conference room
A portable tablet
computer to be used as a catalog for books and media materials
A Conference Room
Videoconferencing System
Thank
your Johnson Family for your support and help.
You are greatly appreciated.

Pickleville Philosophy
Living Off the Land
Jim Stone, the Pickleville Philosopher
One of my most favorite things to do is to tie flies. It’s pretty neat to make them homemade, and
then use them to catch a nice fish to put on your dinner table. When I started my first business I loved to
travel the western United States. It was
so much fun. Me and the dogs would
basically go float all the big name We had no money; it was all depending on
selling some flies to the guides and outfitters.
rivers in the west.
I’d take a pair of women’s pantyhose and stretch them around a homemade frame work made from sticks we found on the river bank, then I’d put the makeshift net downstream. At that
point we dogs would turn over the rocks and soil from the bottom of the river, it
would expose all the aquatic life from the river, and then we’d put the bugs
and aquatic life in a ten gallon fish tank and see all the different stages of
a bug’s life. Fish are just like us they like their dinner fresh, because it
tastes the best to them. So the tied flies should look fresh.
Us dogs would catch a bunch of fish so everyone could see
than we’d go set up a cheap card table at the boat launch where everyone took their
boat out and we’d sell flies to hopefully make enough money to put gas in the
truck and food in our bellies and to move on to another river to explore it and
live another awesome experience and make memories together in our short lifetime.
I really miss the wild rivers and living off the land. Me and the dogs are really wanting to leave
this chaotic world behind and go float and fish some wild rivers again. Big
smiles from all of us to all of you.
Clarification
Raspberry Days will be held at the Heritage Park even though it will not be completely finished with restrooms. RCTonline reported "Council member Pat Argyle said that the park is not going to be completed prior to Raspberry Days. Sod will be brought in June 1, to finish up most of the grass for the park." This caused confusion about whether or not the event will be held at the park. They will bring in portable toilets and other needed amenities for the popular August event.
Rich County School Board Meeting
Kathie B. Anderson, Reporter
Rich Civic Times
RANDOLPH, Utah. May
20,2019. Rich High School students
Hannah Coburn, Jaden Nelson, Logan Johnson, Emily Willi, Lauren Thomson, Janica
Carver, Charmayne Huffaker, Kim Cubus, Taye Petersen, and Taylor McKinnon
received Associate Degrees from Utah State University. Fallon Johnson was awarded the Bridgerland
Applied Technical College Presidential Scholarship for Drafting.
On Thursday, May 30, 2019, Hogan and Associate will open bids
for the construction of the new additions to the local middle school and high
school buildings. Superintendent Dale Lamborn and Richard Limb
will be in attendance. An
Interest-based Facilitation will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, 7:00 P.M. at
the District Office.
The (”USBE”), Brett
Baltazar, Auditor and Scott Jones, Deputy Superintendent of operations (
Financial Operation Section), sent a
letter to Dale Lamborn stating the USBE 2018 has completed its annual review of
LEA’s fiscal year Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), (APR), audited
financial report, single audit (if applicable), and management letter. These annual reviews are conducted a part of
(USBE’s) responsibility to verify audits of financial records in accordance with
state law. The reviews were conducted in
accordance with the Uniform Guidance Audit Act and are part of the Utah State
Board of Education’s responsibility for sub-recipient monitoring of federal
grant funds. No material
weaknesses, significant deficiencies, or other significant findings that
require follow-up for the fiscal year 2018 audit were identified. The
School District and its staff were congratulated with special thanks to Jennie
Johnson for her hard work in preparing this report!
Dr. Christie Kane was the keynote speaker for the Community
Coalition meeting held on May 7, 2019.
Her theme “Unplug and Connect” was presented to the standing room only
auditorium. Her main message was that
everyone, especially children, need hugs to connect. She teaches that you can counteract the
negative impacts of technology through human connection.
Research shows that screen time increases the
release of dopamine. Dopamine is released
by neurons in the brain’s reward center by drugs including opiates, alcohol,
nicotine, amphetamines and cocaine. Dr.
Kane’s research shows that the longer a child looks at a screen, the more the
brain produces dopamine. The build-up of
dopamine due to screen time increases aggression.
Oxytocin counteracts the effect of dopamine. The body naturally produces oxytocin from
human connection like hugs. Dr. Kane
teaches people that giving 8 second hugs, 8 times a day creates the human
connection that will make a big difference.
KSL did a feature study on Dr. Kane’s research through the eyes of the
Governor’s daughter-in-law Carmen Rasmussen Herbert. Carmen Herbert said that after attending a
seminar with Dr. Kane, she has implemented 8 second hugs, 8 times per day, with
her four sons, and it has made a world of difference.
The next School Board Meeting, including a Budget Hearing,

Raspberry Days Locals Craft Fair Booths
If you are a fulltime resident of Rich County, UT or Bear Lake County, ID and make your own crafts and works of art but haven't participated in the Raspberry Days Craft Fair because of the booth fee - this post is for you. This year the indoor locals craft fair has been integrated into the outdoor fair but the good news is that the booth fees for us will still be $50. Thus, you can have a booth at the outdoor fair at this affordable price.
The rules, application, and agreement can be found at www.gardencityut.us under Raspberry Days then scroll down to Bear Lake Valley Craft Fair.
The committee is in process of judging applications for entrance into the fair with priority for local vendors. Thus, it would be to your advantage to get your applications in as soon as possible so that the available spaces aren't filled up by others. It would be great to have as much local representation as possible. So, take a look at the rules and if you meet the requirements for these bargain booths then get your paperwork in and spread the word to anyone you know who may be interested.
