Garden City Fire Dept. June 16th

Reporter Randall Knight

The meeting started on time at 6:32 PM and all board members were present.  CPA Tiffany Wahlberg and Chief Mike Wahlberg were also in attendance.  Nobody else was present.

The county Road & Bridge Supervisor stated that the new fire department lot needs a 4ft by 30ft culvert in order to get an encroachment permit.  The culvert was purchased from Thomas Rock and will be installed by Dirt Heads. The property deed has not yet been recorded because the survey was incorrect.

The fire department will be on hand for any emergencies at the July 4th and 24th events.  The district will also provide the community BBQ on the 24th as in previous years. Raspberry Days will also have fireworks and the district will be on hand for emergencies.

The fire boat was put in the water at the marina later than anticipated due to some wiring and mechanical issues.

No burn permits can be issued from June 15 to mid-October by order of the state fire marshal.  This does not apply to fires in approved fire pits. The fire chief provides burn permits within Garden City limits and Travis Hobbs provides them for the county.  Personal fire pits must be inspected prior to use.

Responses: 1 propane leak, 4 CO calls, 5 fire alarms, 9 fire pit inspections, 5 business inspections, 12 short-term rental inspections, 11 burn permits, 1 fire callout, 30 medical assists, 1 agency assist

Heirloom Recipes: Chicken Casserole by Louise Pope Austad

History of Our Area: Bear Lake Suckers

In the early days suckers formed a cheap wholesome food for the early settlers.  You can't catch a sucker with a hook and line. l The early settlers in Cache Valley would make trips to Bear Lake bringing empty barrels to stock with fish for their winter supply.

Charles H. Alley Sr., living on one half of an alluvial fault out of South Eden Canyon, some eight miles down the east side of the lake from Laketown.  He seigned the fish at night and often the catch would add up to three thousand a night.  He sold them to the Cache Valley people for one-half cent a piece.

The men cleaned, skinned and salted them and placed them in the barrels right at the lake shore.  The meat of the sucker is white and delicious, the bones are terrible, like two edged swords - especially those in the tail end.  From the ribs to the neck they're delicious.

The great schools of fish made black shadows in the lake.

Bear Lake SplashBack

Summer is Here!

June 13, 2025

As of June 1st the snow was essentially gone from the Upper Bear Basin (SWE left graph). You will notice the SWE declined faster than average in May. And the month of May was not a good month for Precipitation (right graph) either as we only got 62% of the average precipitation. The first half of June has been flat also. All the above has resulted in streamflow in the Bear River that is much lower than last year at essentially all the monitoring points.

Bear Lake water level was 5919.12ft on yesterday, which is about 78% of capacity. The peak water level this year was May 24th at 5919.37 ft. The peak was about a month earlier than last year and about one foot lower. But as the photo below from today shows.....it's pretty good at the lake!

The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center forecasts for the rest of June are pretty much warmer than usual with lower than average precipitation.

As always I want to thank the folks at NCRS, CBRFC, RMP and all the others who help me compile the Splashback.

BEAR LAKE WATER LEVEL

Fiber Optics in Logan Canyon Update

Construction Update | June 16, 2025

Driver Safety Reminders: Use caution and prioritize safety while travelling through the construction area. Reduce speed, follow posted signage and be alert of crew members and equipment.

Installing fiber optic conduit along US - 89 in Logan Canyon

Upcoming Construction Activities

Crews will continue trenching for fiber conduit installation in the traffic lanes at the following locations:

  • Milepost (MP) 470.5 to 472.5 (near Right Hand Fork)
  • Milepost 486 to 487 (near SR-243)

This work includes rock saw excavation, allowing for precise material removal with minimal impact to surrounding structures.

Additionally, crews will perform milling on Monday, June 16, followed by paving operations on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 17–18, between MP 487 to 488. Please drive with caution through the work zones.

Drivers can anticipate traffic delays and signalized one-way traffic at multiple locations throughout the project area.

Project Overview

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is undertaking a project to install fiber optics cable in Logan Canyon. This fiber optic cable installation will improve broadband access in Logan Canyon, allowing for easier and more reliable community connection for Logan City, Garden City, and Beaver Mountain Resort. It will also strengthen and enhance communication capabilities, strengthen emergency service support and create opportunities for these communities to expand services and improve connectivity.

Work began in early May and will last approximately 18 months.

What to Expect

  • Daytime work Monday - Thursday, Friday 7 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Occasional weekend work
  • Winter shutdown with finish work through fall 2026
  • Moving operations throughout the canyon
  • One way traffic with temporary signals, at various locations
  • Delays are anticipated throughout the canyon
  • Noise, dust, and vibration
  • Heavy equipment, support vehicles, and crew members

CAUTION: Motorcyclists and cyclists

  • Uneven roadway surface in travel lanes

*Construction schedules and traffic impacts are subject to change

due to weather, utility, equipment and material delays.
