November 2021 Carol Ann Dyer

Thank you KOA for another wonderful Halloween celebration!

Veterans Day Nov. 11, 2021

Veterans Day Nov. 11, 2021

Make this a day to talk to your families about why Veterans Day was created and how we can thank the people who served our country.

This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to "Veterans Day" in order to account for all veterans in all wars. When first celebrated as Armistice Day, the day marked the end of World War I, formally recognized on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month” in 1918.

According to the American Community Survey there were 134 veterans living in Rich County between 2015 – 2019.

Check out the names on the Statue of Robert Calder in Garden City and another group at the Rich County Courthouse in Randolph.

Redistricting in Utah and how it affects Rich County

One our readers asked Chris Wilson, our representative, about the redistricting that is going on in the State of Utah and how it will affect our county. He suggested that we go to redistricting.utah.gov and take a look at the maps presented. Better Boundaries has worked several years in researching and mapping Utah. We may only have a small voice, but remember The Who in Dr. Suess’ book.

Garden City Planning & Zoning Nov. 3, 2021

Synopsis:

Chairman Dan Kurek, board members: Kendra Bjoralt, Joey Stocking, and Susann House were present as well as City Code Enforcer, Glen Gilles. The secretary was Sharlene Millard.

There was discussion on final approval for the Kimball Commercial presented by Kimball Strickland which is located on Kimball Lane. They have to figure out the ingress and egress for the development. Questions were about sharing a road to manage the frontage, and how deliveries were to access the store fronts or backs, a possible sidewalk for easy access to various stores, sanitation was discussed, and a retention pond. They were denied as currently presented.

Discussion was held on the rezone for Blue Vista Hills. This property is located west across from the Chevron. They will bring a preliminary/conceptual plan within a year.

Another discussion represented by Zach Swensen centered on the 5 lot subdivision between Solum’s and 250 S. A flood plain discussion was held to make sure the water flows into an area that will hold runoff. This passed the preliminary and they will come back for the final approval.

Matt and Amber Larsen presented a plan to build 4 commercial steel buildings with apartments in the building on the property located to the south of Monster Storage. This was discussion only.

Spinnaker Point asked an amended approval to change the name condo on the plat to townhomes. The townhomes have been inspected to comply with the name townhome. The owners will need to separate a water hookup that serves to townhomes so that they can be individually metered. Passed with contingencies.

Water’s Edge continued development was denied as currently presented.

Rich County School Board

Oct 25, 2021 Rich County Board Meeting Summary:

·        Football Realignment: WY will not allow us to play in postseason for at least 2 years and even then we would need to appeal to be allowed (most likely slim chance). Principal Larsen feels we have a decent chance to get UHSAA to let us go independent and still play for postseason. This would allow us to join the WY league for a few years but still play for postseason in UT. We would have to go in as the lowest seed in UT postseason if they even allowed us. Board voted to go ahead with telling WY we will be joining them but make it conditional on UHSAA allowing us to play postseason in UT. We will know more come Nov board meeting

·        Vaping Litigation: Board voted to join the nationwide vaping litigation more as a statement against vaping but not expecting much money to come out of that case since we are such a small school and any financial winnings from the case will be paid out based off student size in the schools that have joined. If any money does come from it, we will decide how to best spend that in combating vaping (education, counseling, etc.)

·        Policy 511: School board approved 1st reading of new policy which basically gives the teachers and administration more options on disciplining for cell phone use instead of jumping straight to the teacher/administration having to take the phone

·        Winter Sports: Board approved the schedule for RMS and RHS winter sports. I asked the administration to bring these schedules to the board when they are initially created rather than right before the season.

·        Bus Quote: Board voted to purchase a new bus. Also, it was mentioned that the old bus that this new bus will replace was sold for a few thousand dollars on a surplus site. The fleet will get by being a bus short until the new bus comes (mid-summer of 2022).

·        URS Audit: Want to give a shoutout to Jennie Sorensen Johnson and others that help her. This audit was quite the pain in their side but because of her hard work and others around her the school district passed with only a couple items which were handled right there in the audit.

·        Staffing: The board went into closed session to discuss staffing

·        Nov Board meeting: Will be held Nov 22nd at 12pm at District Offices.

If you want to listen to the whole meeting you can go to https://www.richschool.org/en-US/board-info-77b56176 and either listen to the audio recording or watch the video.

Peterson, Karl Raymond

·        Nov 2, 2021

Karl Raymond Peterson of Providence, UT passed away peacefully, from natural causes due to old age, on October 30, 2021 with his beloved granddaughter, Paige, by his side. Karl, the eldest child of Raymond Parley and Zora Poulsen Peterson, was born January 9, 1934, at the family home in Montpelier, Idaho. He was the first grandchild on both sides of the family. His life education was on the small family farm where he farmed with horses, milked cows, and contributed to the welfare of his parents and five siblings.

He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1952 and then attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah where he remarkably played football for two years before serving an LDS mission in the Eastern States.

It was there that he met Donna Jean Brown, a sister missionary, from Manti, Utah who became his eternal companion. After they completed their honorable missions, they were married for time and all eternity on March 17, 1956 in the Manti Temple

Services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, November 6 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel at 34 East Center, Logan.

Condolences may be expressed online at www.allenmortuaries.com

Robert Wells Moffitt, 88 years old, passed away November 3, 2021, in Mesquite, Nevada. He was born March 25, 1933, to Bryant Andrew Moffitt and Rhea Reid in Orangeville, Utah. Bob had three sisters, Lorna, Beth, and Joan and one brother, Reid. They grew up in Orangeville with their mother, after losing their father when Bob was 11 years old.

Bob had completed his freshman year at Utah State College when he married the love of his life, Connie Rae Van Buren, on June 3, 1953, in the Manti Temple. Bob and Connie lived in Orangeville when their first child, Barbara (Bobbie), was born the following March. Three years later, in July, Molly was born and a year and a half later, Clark was born in January. Their family was complete.

Bob went to work for Utah Power and Light Company in lines and services in Price, Utah. He was then selected for a position at the Carbon Power Plant. Almost as soon as he completed building a house in Orangeville for his family, he accepted a position in Kemmerer, Wyoming, where he eventually became a control room operator for the Naughton Power Plant.

Bob enjoyed spending time in the outdoors fishing, hunting, camping and riding snowmobiles. He volunteered for the Search and Rescue and even tried his hand once at raising pigs! He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as the ward clerk for several years while living in Kemmerer.  One of Bob’s favorite words was “Copacetic.” When asked what the meaning of that word was, his reply was always, “Plum, level, and true,” which is how Bob lived his life.

In 1972, Bob moved his family to Ogden, Utah, where he worked at the Little Mountain Power Plant. Bob and Connie made many lifelong friends while in Ogden and loved their nearly 50 years spent there. They loved to dance together, especially the Jitterbug, but on Friday nights at the Ogden Elks Lodge, you could find Bob dancing with the ladies whose husbands weren’t as light on their feet as he was. On weekends in the fall, you could hear him shout, “Sack the Quarterback NOW” at the Weber State football games, where everyone in the stands knew and loved him.

After 35 years of dedicated service to the power company, Bob and Connie hit the road in their motorhome, visiting every state in the continental United States. They made lifelong memories of all the places they visited and would talk about these good times for years to come.

Bob loved his family more than anything else and always wanted the “kids” around. He and Connie spent their summers at their home in Garden City, Utah. Their children, and now their grandchildren, have carried on that tradition by purchasing homes near their home. Weekends at the lake are full of family time because, after all, “Where there’s heart room there’s house room.” Bob and Connie spent the last 4 winters as snowbirds in Mesquite, Nevada, passing time in the sunshine and watching cowboy shows on TV.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brother, and great grandson Keifer Deamer. He is leaving behind his wife Connie, his three children Bobbie (Richard) Hymas, Molly (Dennis) Landrie, Clark (Vickie) Moffitt, grandchildren Jessica (Brandon) Rogers, Jaclyn (Brendan) Dahl, Tyler (Tori) Deamer, Parker Deamer, Zachary (Gabe) Moffitt, Sara Moffitt,Joshua Landrie, Heather (John) Love, Phillip Moelter, Rissie Carson Moelter, Charles “Chuck” Moelter, Steven (Brittany) Moelter, and Camden (Allysa) McArthur, 29 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly and will miss him greatly. Bob’s family would like to thank Atlas Hospice (Kylie and Natalie)in Garden City, Mesa ViewHospice in Mesquite, and all the wonderful Resident’s Assistants and Med Techs at Mesa Valley Estates in Mesquite. Your kindness is immeasurable.

The family invites you to leave a message or memory on their Guestbook page at virginvalleymortuary.com.
