The Beauty of the Lake by C.T. Buttars

WAVES ABOVE THE LAKE???  These rarely seen Kelvin-Hemholtz “wave clouds” are caused by two layers of air with different densities and wind speeds.

(I am a little late writing this column concerning my subject matter).  One of my favorite flowers and smell in the late spring at Bear Lake is the Lilac bush.  This plant has been around for a long time.  Originally it was found on the rocky shores of the Balkan Peninsula.  It is member of the Olive family which contributes to its hardiness.  It was introduced to Europe in 1562 by the Romans and spread throughout the continent in the following years.  They were introduced to North America in the mid-1700’s.

I have always loved lilacs ever since I was a child, looking at the intricate flower and smelling them in our backyard.  To me, when they blossom, it means that spring is finally here.  They blossom according to temperature.  First you will see them in along the Wasatch Front and later in Cache Valley, then finally in Bear Lake.  They seem to grow everywhere and apparently do not need much care once they are established.  You always can always notice the purple and white flowers around old, broken down structures and homesteads where no one takes care of them.

As an old, fisheries biologist operating a fish trap on Swan Creek for 40 years, I would always look for their blooms.  Regardless of the preceding weather when they appeared it meant the Bear Lake cutthroat would enter the trap in earnest.  One my favorite, unscientific observations.

I think lilacs are so common people don’t care about them anymore.  You rarely see lilacs planted in the new subdivisions or in the bushes in the plant stores.  Their aroma and purple color are a base for countless items for sale on the Internet.  I love them because they are survivors.  Harsh winters, snow, wind, or drought don’t seem to bother them.  I will always look forward to seeing them bloom.

May Fun Facts

Boardwalk

"We have a whole new boardwalk—sturdy and beautifully crafted. The redwood looks stunning, and it even seems a little wider to me, whether it truly is or not. Winding through the trees and marsh, the path offers a breathtaking journey, culminating in that first glimpse of the lake.  Thank you to the Town Council.

Rich High Track

 Deseret News:

Rich’s Paige Smith had herself quite a day in the 1A meet. It began with a new PR in the 3,200 meters as she finished runner-up with a time of 11:34.47.

A few hours later in the high jump, the junior broke the 1A state record as she cleared 5’06.25, eclipsing the old record set by Panguitch’s Kapri Orton in 2018 by a quarter inch.

Hudson Parry, Rich Placed 1st in the 100, 200, & 400 meters

“I’m really pleased with what happened today,” Parry said. “I did have some goals to break some state records that I didn’t get, but I’m only a sophomore, so I have a few more years to get those.”

Scotty Wakefield placed 8th in the 500 meter race.

(I will include the rest of the amazing student athletes next week-I just found the link)

Book Club Meets Wed. May 21st 6:00 PM

History of Our Area - Ideal Beach

In 1915 James W. Neil of Kemmerer, Wyoming, visited the community and was favorably impressed.  He conceived the idea of securing property on the lake shore and building a resort.  He bought a piece of land on the lake shore from Thomas and Joseph Hodges which they had used for lambing grounds, and in 1926 incorporated Ideal Beach Amusement Company, financed by the businessmen of Kemmerer.  It was given its name because of the nature of the beautiful sandy beach upon which it was located.  Part of the lodge and a few cabins were built the first year and also a dance pavilion with a spring floor.

Fifty canvas row boats and canoes were purchased from Old Town, Maine, and put into service.  The following year more cabins were added making forty-one in all.  The lodge was completed with a first class dining room.  Boating, bathing, and dancing were the chief amusements.  In 1918 a merry-go-round was added and other concession-like games were installed and operated by John Wilson and Archie Niel.

From the book "Rich Memories' published in 1962

Another article about Ideal Beach states that Ideal Beach was built in 1916, and given the name because of its beautiful sandy beach.  There is a large dance hall with a spring floor, a large cafe, a new modern motel, and many cabins....in 1960 they build a new boat ramp that can put two boats in the water at once.
