JUST A LITTLE BEAR LAKE HISTORY By C. T. Buttars

Previously, we highlighted students, teachers and activities from the 1940-41 “Mustang”, the first yearbook of North Rich High School in Laketown, Utah.  The school’s athletes were equally impressive.  The high school cheer leaders and pep club were proud supporters of the team and displayed their spirit at all the games.

Here are the team’s accomplishments for the School year 1940-41:

It's Hot and Dry.....But Maybe Not as Much!

September 3, 2025

Precipitation in August sort of rescued the summer....but it all came in the last 6 days of the month. The graph below shows the Upper Bear basin received 1.1" of rain in August (69% of average). This brings the water year precipitation up to the 10th percentile of the last 30 yrs. On the right soil moisture rose from 62% of average to the current 80% of average which if we have decent rain in the fall, it should help the snow runoff in the spring.

The graph on the left below shows the Bear River streamflow at Stewart Dam over the year. It was pretty dismal this year. The graph on the right of the Bear River peak flow at the WY ID border puts this year in perspective.

Despite all this grim data it has been a pretty good summer for Bear Lake water level. We peaked at about 5919.3 feet and have dropped the 'average' 4 feet during the summer. The graph below suggests that that water drop is maybe leveling off as we move into the fall.

The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center forecast is for above average temperatures and average precipitation for our area through October.

As always I want to thank the folks at NCRS, CBRFC, RMP and all the others who help me compile the Splashback.
