History Trivia-Native American track and field star

Olympian legend Jim Thorpe had his running shoes stolen the morning of the 1912 Olympics. He found two mismatched shoes in a garbage bin and wore them, winning one silver and two gold medals.

Born on May 28, 1888, in present-day Oklahoma, Jim Thorpe was one of the most successful all-around American athletes of the 20th century. At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden, he won two gold medals, one for the decathlon and the other for the classic pentathlon (in which he won four of five events). When being awarded his medals, King Gustav V of Sweden told Thorpe, “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world.”

However, only a year later, Thorpe was stripped of this honor after an investigation conducted by the Amateur Athletic Union revealed that he had played semiprofessional baseball from 1909 to 1910, disqualifying him from Olympic competition. Many people believe that Thorpe was deprived of his medals due to his ethnicity. It wasn’t until 1983 that the International Olympic Committee officially reinstated Thorpe’s medals and even that came at a cost—he was (and still is) listed as co-champion, rather than the all-out winner.

To stay informed about our schools check the Calendars for Rich School District and watch the proceedings of the District School Board on Zoom. I finally watched the meeting last week and it was very informative. A decision had to be made on the new track and field facility and after much review of the finances the Board approved the decision to sign the contract to begin the work.

Kentucky Downs owner agrees to buy Wyoming Downs

The owner of Kentucky Downs and a partner have reached an agreement to purchase Wyoming Downs and all of its off-track betting parlors, the parties announced on Monday. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

ECL Entertainment, a company headed by Ron Winchell and Marc Falcone that owns Kentucky Downs and its associated casinos, is making the acquisition with the Clairvest Group, a Toronto-based private equity company. The partners previously acquired a charitable gaming facility in New Hampshire last year.

Like Kentucky Downs, Wyoming Downs operates historical horse racing machines at its racing facility, along with 18 other locations around the state.

“Given our company’s deep roots in horse racing, the purchase of Wyoming Downs is a natural extension of our business,” said Winchell, in a release. “We look forward to working with all of the Wyoming Downs stakeholders.”

Wyoming Downs, which is located in Evanston in the southwest corner of the state, is currently owned by a partnership led by Wyoming Equity Investors and Eric Nelson.

“This is a huge win for the state of Wyoming,” Nelson said, in the release. “ECL is the right operator at the right time for Wyoming Downs and will make the state proud.”

The transaction, which will need several regulatory approvals, is expected to close in the second quarter of this year.

Wyoming Downs is scheduled to run from June 8 to Aug. 11 this year, racing on Saturdays and Sundays, for 20 live racing dates. The track conducts a mixed meet of Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses.
