80 years from Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor Revisited by Bess Huefner
my father, Edward Lee Seyfried had joined the Navy. His ship had been
commissioned on August 21, 1941 and sent to Hawaii to service sea planes. He
was in the hold of the Tangier checking the clocks early on the Sunday morning of December 7, 1941. USS Tangier was still
astern of Utah when
the first wave of Japanese aircraft flew into Pearl Harbor. The Utah, which had been
converted from a battleship into a target ship, eventually capsized after
taking extensive damage from Japanese torpedoes, but the Tangier came through
unharmed. When the alarm went off his mate went up the ladder and
locked the hold. Ed was in the hold for at least an hour before he was
released. When he got on deck there were lots of men in the water and his ship
mates were working hard to haul the sailors on board. The water was on fire and
a lot of the men died because of their burns. Like many of the survivors, Dad did not talk about his
experiences. He did say he learned to pray in that hour he was locked in the
hold.
Christmas tree permits
Christmas tree permits are
now available to purchase online through recreation.gov until December 31. Details regarding
designated cutting areas, dates and height restrictions may be found at recreation.gov. Last year, the Forest sold 8,732 permits
and over 30% were from online sales.
The Every Kid Outdoors provides
one free Christmas Tree permit to any fourth grader who presents a valid Every
Kid Outdoor pass. Please keep in mind this offer can only be validated through
the local Forest Service and recreation.gov site.
Vendors are unable to provide free passes. The Every Kid in a Park initiative
allows fourth graders to go to the Every Kid in the Park web site and obtain a
pass for free entry for them and their families to more than 2,000 federally
managed lands and waters for an entire year starting September 1, 2021.

Good Stuff! The Man Who Invented Christmas by John Brown
If you love funny, feel-good movies, today’s you’re lucky
day.
Because I’m going to tell you about one that will help brighten
your Christmas season.
The movie is The Man Who Invented Christmas.
It’s about Charles Dickens, the author of A Christmas
Carol.
Now some of you might already be groaning. Please, no, not
another story about Scrooge.
I felt the same way. I haven’t enjoyed a movie about Scrooge
for a long time. No, not even the one featuring Scrooge McDuck.
So I didn’t want to watch this, but I kept hearing so many
good reviews, I finally caved and gave it a shot. I’m so happy I did.
This delightful movie reinvigorates the story with a whole new
twist because it’s not about Scrooge. Not directly.
Instead, it’s about Charles Dickens. It’s 1843 and Dickens
is suffering financial hardship because his last three books bombed in the
marketplace. He determines to write a new book and publish it himself to
restore his finances. That book is A Christmas Carol.
Dickens needs to finish it in six weeks so it can be ready
for Christmas. That’s difficult enough, but will anyone read it? His friends
and publishers keep telling him that the book will be a failure because, at the
time, many thought Christmas irrelevant and didn’t celebrate it. Furthermore,
the story isn’t developing as it should.
Now the movie does take some dramatic license, but, by the
end, I think you’ll agree the message of Scrooge is never more poignant. I watched
the final scene with Scrooge multiple times and thought about it for days
afterwards.
If you want to laugh, be inspired, and feel the spirit of
Christmas, I think you’ll love this movie.

Garden City Fire District Board meeting, December 2021
Leonard O’Reilly, Reporter
Randall Knight presided - All board members present
Most of the meeting was
spent on discussing and then passing the budget for 2022.
The board voted for an increase of 10% for the volunteer firefighters.
The construction update was given and very little is left to be done. The cabinets have been installed and are awaiting granite tops and the water heater will be installed shortly.
The Fire District was
grateful for two gifts given by anonymous donors this past month.
The first is the green
ARFF Marine 1,000 gallon fire fighting truck that is sitting alongside the
building. It will be painted shortly and used as a wildland truck.
The second is a low
pressure airbag system that will be used for rescues. It lifts large and heavy
items.
The responses for the
month are:
6 - Medical
calls
104-Inspections
8 - Business
inspections
There were no Fire calls

Things to Research
As the Bear Lake Valley continues to grow exponentially all residents need to be aware of the problems associated with each community. St. Charles area has recently been the recipient of an application to build many homes in a self-contained planned community. To find out more go to Bear Lake County Planning and Zoning to understand what is happening.
Andrew Stokes as Ranger of the Year for 2021
Idaho Parks and Recreation
Announces Andrew Stokes as Ranger of the Year for 2021
IDAHO (November 30, 2021) – The Idaho Department of Parks and
Recreation (IDPR) is proud to announce Andrew (Andy) Stokes, of Bear Lake State
Park, as Ranger of the Year for 2021.
Nominated by Park Manager, Kirk Rich, he had this to say about
Andy:
“Andy has a long affiliation with the park working
as both a park seasonal and a marine deputy. His life before his parks and rec
career included working as a general contractor with a background in
construction. That means he can build anything as well as fix about anything
that is broken. In the past two seasons, he has spearheaded a boat dock
replacement project as well as laying out parking areas for another unit of the
park. He has served through four hot summers as park ranger working through
seasons where we turn away large crowds due to lack of parking capacity. Most
recently, he took the lead on implementing the new parking lot construction at
East Beach. He continues to work through the Development Bureau on this and
other projects.
“His proposal for the newly proposed Bear Lake
North Beach (west) project stands as the current working document for that
proposal. This year he was active in implementing the newly enacted fee
increase at North Beach which has doubled park income within the first two
months of the year. He has upgraded the approach and kiosk access at North
Beach allowing the park to process over 300 cars in an hour. He is always
looking for a new and better way. He has strong contacts in the community on
both sides of the line. He is a cheerleader for IDPR and makes the agency look
good on many fronts. He continues to be the glue that holds the park together
on many fronts."
Congratulations Andy and thank you for your hard
work and dedication!
OBITUARY
Marcia
Ann Solum left this mortal existence on November 23, 2021, with the same fight
in her heart and determination in her soul that she carried with her throughout
her life. She was 82 years old and far
from ready to say goodbye to her husband, children, grandchildren, and the
beauty of her life in Garden City. As
she expressed to her husband Dallas in her last few days, although they already
had a great run together, she was not quite ready for it to end.
Marcia met Dallas when she was a junior in high school over a chocolate banana shake at one of the two drug stores in Soda Springs. For Dallas it was immediate love, and apparently, it was the same for Marcia. Marcia’s announcement to her parents that she had found the man she wanted to marry was met with understandable parental concern, and it was agreed that she could only marry after she graduated from high school. So, at the age of eighteen and one day after her high school graduation, she married Dallas H. Solum in the Logan Utah Temple on May 31, 1957. They have enjoyed each other’s love and company for over sixty-four years.
She is survived by her husband
Dallas, her three sisters Kathy Wakeling (Dave), Jo Jolley and Sherrie Lloyd-White
(David); her daughter Sue Skanchy (Randall) and three sons Scott (Tammy), Corey
(Amy) and Derek (Melissa); along with 12 grandchildren and 8 great
grandchildren.

She attended Lewiston Elementary, South Cache middle School and graduated from
Preston High School in 1997. Shortly after she married the love of her life and
her High School sweetheart Chad Ryan Geddes on June 28, 1997.
She is survived by her
