Reflections on the Journey

Ed Note:  Leslie struggles with brain chemistry issues and is sharing her amazing journey as a wonderful wife, mother, friend and colleague.

By Leslie Scott

Have you ever heard the phrase, "You are what you eat?" Do you believe it?

What about, "STAND like a superhero, FEEL like a superhero, ACT like a superhero?"

The first time I heard about the power pose was from a TV show. A highly successful surgeon would stand like Superman for 2 minutes before performing a highly intense surgery. It helped to clear her mind, made her believe that she was powerful, and gave her the confidence she needed to perform her task.

I laughed! How silly! But it made for super great TV! I mean, come on, who doesn't want to believe that they are as awesome as Superman?

On a rather low day, the memory of this scene came back to me, and I googled it. Because isn't that what we do when we need answers to all of life's questions?

It is a HIGHLY researched topic my friends!

There are many scientific studies that show if you stand in a superhero pose for a short amount of time before performing a hard task, you actually perform better!

The cortisol (stress) hormones lower, and the testosterone (confidence boosting) hormones raise. Thus, you actually start to believe that you are powerful.

Now, you insert here what that hard task may be. For some it may be job interview, it might be performing intense surgery, and it might be taking a test.

But for me, it's walking out the door in the morning.

I often times find myself stopping mid hair straightening, and posing. I look in the mirror and stare at the girl I see. "Breathe," I say. "You can do this today."I don't laugh when I see someone posing like a superhero anymore. Try it out and see how it makes you feel.

"You're much stronger than you think you are. Trust me." -- Superman

Get your Covid 19 Vaccine

The Bear River Health District reports that nearly 50% of our residents are vaccinated.  It needs to be closer to 70% for "herd immunity" and a return to normal.  The shots are free and available.  Call the Bear Lake Community Health Clinic https://www.bearlakecommunityhealthcenter.org/bear-lake-community-health-center-bear-lake-utah/ or call (435) 946-3660

Request an appointment to receive your Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at the Garden City clinic.  You can fill out the forms online or call.

You can also get vaccines in Logan, Montpelier and Evanston. Don't delay, the new Delta variant is worse than the first and much easier to catch.

Raspberry freeze - no Calderberry crop this year

By Tammy Calder

Well... we’ve got a small problem here. There will not be a raspberry crop this year. Due to an early frost/snowfall last October before the berry shoots had gone dormant, our patch has no raspberries. We are heart-broken but that’s life in agriculture.

We’ve had bumper crops in the past so we will take this loss in stride. Next years growth looks really good. We are not speaking for the other berry growers in the valley - they can tell you their own story. But it was a valley-wide freeze. Sorry for the inconvenience - see you in 2022.

Beach Chair Cup Holders Causing Dozens Of Accidental 911 Calls At Bear Lake

BY MIKE ANDERSON & CARY J. SCHWANITZ, KSL TV | JULY 6, 2021 AT 6:41 PM

BEAR LAKE STATE PARK, Utah — Dozens of accidental 911 calls have tied up dispatchers around Bear Lake and authorities said it’s happening more often as people look for heat relief on the beaches.

Dispatchers said it’s all related to boats and beach chair cup holders, and it happens mostly with iPhones.

“I put it in the cup holder and walked away and started to hear the sirens going off on it,” said Ann Wells.

Her sister-in-law, Jessica Chapman, knew exactly what that sound was Tuesday afternoon.

“So I was like, ‘Oh no! It’s calling 911! Hurry and stop it!’ But uh, we didn’t make it in time,” she said.

It has happened to her as well.

“I recently was at a swim meet, using that same chair, and three times, I kept hearing this siren thing,” Chapman explained. “And then I picked up my phone. I saw it was calling 911. I was like ‘Ahhh!’”

For dispatchers down the road in Randolph, when they answer the 911 call, all they hear is a garbled conversation.

“Yeah, when you get 50 of those in a day, and only four or five of them are real calls, it is a problem because we have to hang on the line,” said Joey Stocking, a dispatcher with the Rich County Sheriff’s office.

Stocking said those butt-dials make up roughly 90% of their calls right now.

“If I take a 911 call, I’m tied up. I can’t listen to my officers on the radio and I can’t answer other 911 calls,” he said.

He said those cup-holders end up pushing the right buttons to call 911.

Dispatcher Joey Stocking says he gets up to 40 accidental 911 calls every day. (KSL TV)

“It starts counting down,” he described as he demonstrated the problem on a phone and a siren sounded. “It will make that noise, but people don’t hear it because they’re out on the beach. And there, now we’ve dialed 911.”

Dispatcher Joey Stocking

That’s why he’s asking people to shut off that option in their phone settings.

“Just scroll down until you see emergency SOS. That’s where you click ‘on’. And so there’s two options, and the problem is this auto call,” said Stocking.

Once they know, most people agree that it’s worth shutting off.

“I’m just more embarrassed, I guess than anything,” Wells said. “Like, that was too easy, I guess to call 911.”

Stocking said if you do accidentally dial 911, just stay on the line and tell the operator that it was an accident. That way they don’t have to call you back.

Even if it seems like an accident, they still have to make sure everyone’s okay.

New LEGO store opens in Garden City

The Outpost

The Outpost Lego store opened July 2 in Garden City.

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you! A Lego store called “The Outpost” opened on July 2 in Garden City! It’s located in the Moose Buns Coffee Shop next to Bear Lake Renegade Raceway Go-Karts and is a 200-square-foot building in the mini-golf course area.

The Outpost is owned and operated by Jason Messer, who also owns an after-market Lego store in California called “Bricks and Minifigs.” This is just one of 40 Lego stores he owns across the United States with the franchise headquarters located south of Orem, Utah, and two stores located in Salt Lake City.

The Outpost carries new Legos, some previously loved Lego sets, a lot of retired Lego sets, and some new releases that will hit the store Aug. 1. The store also has thousands of minifigs. People can enjoy activities such as handling pull-back racing cars and testing out RC cars. Messer says he will eventually have a Mario mini-golf area as well.

One of the big draws is that the majority of the products in the store are under $20. The store also sells bulk Legos, and you can purchase a whole bucket of Legos you pick by hand for $20. For occasional specials, you will be able to refill the bucket for $15.

Messer lists his stock online, and patrons of the Garden City location can buy items sans shipping because he ships from his warehouse to the Garden City store for pickup.

Reality show “LEGO Masters” 2020 contestant Flynn DeMarco works for Messer at his Concord store. A lot of the “LEGO Masters” contestants are connected with Messers’ franchises across the United States and do activities in the stores. Flynn will be designing part of the mini-golf course that will be at The Outpost next year. He also works the “camps” at the Concord store and may be doing camps at The Outpost via video broadcast in the future.

Camps are approximately an hour-and-a-half long and are activities where young kids get to put together Lego projects that involve moving kits such as pull-back cars or spring-loaded cars. Just this week, one of the camps he did in a store involved catapults. Messer says, “Flynn is great with the kids and it’s amazing.”

Messer goes on to say, “All of our stores, as well as The Outpost, are about people enjoying life and having fun. That’s what I enjoy doing is watching kids just absolutely have a great time in life. It’s all about fun.”

He says he has customers in his stores that come in a couple of times a week. He even has one gentleman who is in his 80s who comes into his Concord store every Friday. It’s about “kids” of every age.
