Obituary-LaVern Sims Prosser Cahoon

St. George, Utah – LaVern Sims Prosser Cahoon, 89, passed away November 17, 2023, at St. George Regional Hospital. She was born in Garden City, Utah on July 21, 1934, to Thomas Everett Sims and Beulah Tremelling.

LaVern married Franklin Brown Prosser on August 9, 1957, in Elko, Nevada. He was the father of Cynthia and Kenneth Franklin Prosser. He was killed in an auto accident on June 11, 1967, in Brevard County, Florida.

LaVern married Alton Walch Cahoon on February 16, 1975, in Elko, Nevada. He passed away on February 27, 2006, in St. George, Utah.

LaVern lived in Garden City, Logan, and Ogden, Utah; Anchorage, Alaska; Warner Robins, Georgia; Merrit Island, Titusville and Cocoa, Florida; and then back to Ogden, Utah. She had a cabin on beautiful Bear Lake and after marrying Alton, was a snowbird each year in St. George and Washington, Utah. She had many secretarial jobs at each of these locations. She was working for NASA at Kennedy Space Center as a Contract Assistant on the Saturn IV Rocket when she was in the terrible auto accident that killed her first husband, Frank. She received brain damage that caused a partial paralysis of her right side. She was 32 years old and spent the rest of her life with the problems the paralysis caused.

LaVern loved her children and stepchildren, the church, and genealogy but golfing was the source of her staying active and not giving in to the curses of paralysis.

LaVern is survived by her children: Kenneth Prosser and Cynthia Pelham; three stepchildren: Sandra Lee Sampson, Lana K. Adams, and Aton Brent Cahoon; many very special grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Nelda Evans. She is a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 12:30 p.m. in the Garden City Cemetery, 449 West Logan Road, Garden City, Utah.

There is also is a place in St. Charles called Minnetonka Market that has a grill and serves hard ice cream shakes as well. These all vary in size and most have some indoor dining but a couple are small and Moosebuns is a drivethrough. Also you can get you specialty sodas at The House of Pop. It is open each day except Sunday from 11 to 5ish. Hope that helps. I work with the Chamber of Commerce and we are close to publishing a winter guide to dining, lodging, and activities. Any support to these business owners that stay open all year is greatly appreciated..

Obituary-Harold H. Hoffman

Harold H Hoffman, a pillar of love, kindness, and unwavering commitment to family and community, passed away on November 10, 2023, in Morgan, Utah at the age of 94.

Born on July 24, 1929, in Randolph, Utah to Albert Leroy and Effie Rose Hayward Hoffman, his life became a testament to dedication, compassion, and the joy of simple, genuine connections with others.
His journey began and remained entrenched in Rich County, where he found purpose and contentment.  In 1948, he united in marriage with his beloved Nilda “Nellie” Mae Longhurst in Woodruff, Utah and they were later sealed in the Logan Temple.  This partnership was the cornerstone of his life until Nilda’s death in 2020, a loss he felt deeply.
Harold’s heart was steadfast and full of warmth.  His experience in the military during the Korean War shaped his humility, underlining his innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life.  His love knew no bounds, extending to his two sons, their wives, children, and grandchildren, where his legacy continues to bloom.
A seasoned, successful rancher in Rich County, the great outdoors was a canvas for his life’s work.  The land, the animals, and the rhythm of nature were elements he cherished, leaving a legacy woven into the very fabric of Rich County.
Harold was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He served faithfully in many different callings, and his faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ was the compass guiding his actions.  Always extending a hand, he lived by the Savior’s teachings, offering aid and support to anyone in need- be it neighbor, friend, or family member.  His approach to life was one making the most of every moment, even when faced with declining health.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Glenn, Elaine, Albert Blaine, Roy, Larry Kay, and Sherlene Joy, and his wife Nilda.  He is survived by his two sons, Neil (Chris) and Kent (Juli), along with a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will feel his loss keenly.
Harold Hoffman leaves behind a tapestry of memories, woven with threads of compassion, dedication, and an unyielding love for life and the people in it.  He now joins his parents, siblings, and his dear wife, leaving a void in the lives of those who were touched by his warmth and grace.
A man of integrity, generosity, and endless patience and love, Harold’s legacy will forever echo in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.
Funeral services honoring Harold were held on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the Randolph LDS church in Randolph, Utah. Interment is at the Randolph Cemetery.

Wildlife Resources-Emily Wright

Hey neighbors!

I am happy to announce a new Walk In Access/Fishing pond site. South Eden Reservoir is located on the east side of Bear Lake in South Eden Canyon. Last week Utah Division of Wildlife Resources stocked 200 sterile Rainbow Trout into the reservoir, and we have 200 Tiger Trout coming this week! Please be respectful and practice 'Leave No Trace' so we can continue to stock this in the future. This along with all the states community fishing ponds require a fishing license for anyone 12 and over. If you have any questions, I am happy to answer. Emily Wright

Bear River Land Conservancy

LOGAN, UT – Bear River Land Conservancy, in partnership with NRCS and other collaborators, has successfully

safeguarded over 1000 acres of precious ranchland, open space, cultural resources, and wildlife habitat in Cache

County, Utah. This milestone was achieved through a voluntary “conservation easement,” ensuring the land's

preservation for future generations.

Conservation easements are agreements where landowners voluntarily and permanently restrict future development,

safeguarding agricultural, wildlife, cultural, and historical values. These agreements are tailored to each property,

preserving its unique conservation values while supporting the landowner’s goals.

Funding for this project was made possible by a collaborative effort involving NRCS’s ACEP/ALE Program, Utah’s

LeRay McAllister Working Farm and Ranch Fund, the Heart of the Rockies Initiative - Keep It Connected Program,

and other private funding sources.

Bear River Land Conservancy, in cooperation with partners like Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust, US Fish and Wildlife

Service, and Intermountain West Joint Venture, continue to expand conservation opportunities for private landowners

in the Bear River Watershed, preserving the region's natural heritage.

Quotes:

Glen Busch, BRLC Board Chair:

“I am proud to be the head of an organization focused on permanently protecting these critical places. This is the third

easement BRLC has closed in less than 12 months, effectively doubling the number of land transactions we have

completed in our 12-year history.”

Emily Fife, NRCS State Conservationist:

“The success of this easement is a testament to the countless organizations and individuals who spent over a decade

championing the conservation of this land. We at NRCS are grateful for the opportunity to support the funding of this

Conservation Easement, and the protection of this historic agricultural land’s natural resources.”

Darren Parry, Representative of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation:

“This conservation easement protects an area of cultural significance to the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone

Nation known as Sagwich Basin.” “Preserved lands like this easement provide a critical resource for future

generations by allowing us to learn, grow, and remember.”

Landowner: “This has been a special place for us. It is one of those places that needs to be conserved. It is probably

the most critical deer and elk winter range in this end of the valley. It is important for the wildlife, it is important for

Sagwich Basin. It is just a real special place.”
