Obituary: Anita Weston
Anita Weston, 79, passed away at her home in Garden City, Utah, on April 9, 2022. A fifth generation Bear Laker, she was born in the family home in Pickleville, Utah, on April 18, 1942. She was the third child of Benjamin Earley Weston and Marie Pope Weston.
Anita attended grade school in Garden City, Utah, and high school at North Rick High School in Laketown, Utah. She graduated from BYU.
Anita filled a mission in the Eastern States mission, serving mostly in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Following her mission she worked as a legal secretary at the Mackay-Burton Law Firm in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Anita began her high school teaching career in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, then in Cokeville, Wyoming. She attended Utah State University earning a Masters degree and a Doctorate. Her higher education provided opportunity for her to teach college for the next 30 years at Aberdeen, South Dakota, the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and with encouragement and a letter of recommendation from L. Tom Perry, at Ricks College and BYU-Idaho.
Anita travelled extensively in the United States, including Hawaii. She visited Egypt and Jordan, absorbing the culture and unique sites.
Anita was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaching Relief Society and Sunday School. She was a President of the Relief Society and a member of the Stake Relief Society Presidency. Anita played the organ in each ward she lived in. She taught piano lessons to hundreds of youth and adults throughout her life.
Anita was active in civic affairs, attending and reporting on many city and county meetings.
Anita loved and stayed close to her parents all their lives. She loved to learn and to teach. She loved Bear Lake and her two little birds. Anita raised beautiful orchids, made many lovely embroidered quilts and crocheted items. Anita was an avid reader, liked puzzles, enjoyed movies and stories on TV and collected Winnie the Poohs,
A funeral will be held in Anita Weston's honor on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at the Garden City Ward Chapel at 11 a.m. A viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m., also at the church.
Letter from the Editor:
Anita Weston, 9 days from her 80th birthday and
with her friend Priscilla from Rexburg sitting by her side, laughing and
talking through the night, Anita went to meet her parents and brother, Dale. No
more pain!
Bess and Don say she was a great neighbor who always tried
to be positive. (Except for the changes going on in Garden City).Family was so important to Anita. Between her
teaching in Cokeville, Wyoming, Canada, Eau Claire, USU and Rexburg, she would
come home to the Ranch at Sage and then onto Garden City. We met her 56 years
ago on the Ben Weston ranch in Pickleville when our little daughter, Kristie,
had gone for a walk from the Kimball house to the state road all by herself and
the Weston’s saw her.
Bobbie Coray said that she and Anita were the terrifying
dynamic duo. They loved going to the County Commission meetings and telling the
Commissioners what they thought of things going on in the County.
Nadine Sprouse loved visiting with Anita and Anita’s mother,
Marie and sharing the tales of olden days.
All of us who knew Anita will miss her laugh and her music.
Piano students from Kristie Huefner Godfrey to the latest round of Moldenhauers
and Parry’s will miss out on her lessons.
Her cousin Darin Satterthwaite will miss his piano lessons
too! Her cousin Wes will also miss her as he was able to live at her home and
do puzzles with her and talk. Her other many cousins will miss her delightful personality.
Anita was so very knowledgeable and would share her insight
on many subjects.
Bobbie Coray's tribute to Anita Weston
She loved and admired her sister Carolyn and her brother Dale who died several years ago.
She had terrible pain from arthritis these last few years, but would readily agree to do any crazy adventure I’d suggest.
I’m going to so miss my funny, sweet sometimes caustically fun friend. I’m feeling tender and I have tears but I’m glad that she is no longer in pain and is with so many of her beloved family. My Chris loved her too so I’m sure he is part of the group gathered to greet her!!Anita Weston, my dear dear friend and partner in crime, died this morning in Garden City. She was the key reporter for the Rich Civic Times for 10 years and before that The Rich County Times for 8 years.
Anita also was the organist in some capacity for over 65 years in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. During that time she also inspired over a hundred piano students many who became organists on missions and in their church services.
She earned her PhD and taught at three universities, the last being at BYU Idaho. She retired early to take care of her beloved mother Marie.
For years she and Marie set up the quilting for Tuesday afternoon quilting for the ladies of Garden City. Hundreds of quilts were sent to needy families and disasters all over the world because of them.
We spent a lot of time together discussing world problems and solutions and all sorts of doctrinal topics. We also had a lot of fun together. We both loved DI shopping and once we hit every DI between Logan and Salt Lake and then every DI in Salt Lake in one day.
She loved to read and was part of the gang who built the Garden City Library. We often shared books we loved. Usually they were books everyone else would roll their eyes at and laugh at us! But she introduced me to the book “A Town Called Alice” we both loved.
Anita could shoot anything with dead aim! Which belied her gentle demeanor. And she loved Fanta orange pop in the can and junk food!
She adored her nieces and nephews. She told me when they were little she bought them all overalls each summer when they came to work on the farm.
My Chris loved her too so I’m sure he is part of the group gathered to greet her!!

Garden City Planning and Zoning Meeting April 6, 2022
A public meeting was held at 5:00 and the agenda was
reviewed. No one called in on the phone. You may access agendas at ut.gov.pmn.
(Citizens, this is your opportunity to voice your opinions in a responsible
way. Our City officials work hard to study the problems that Garden City
faces.)
Regular meeting followed with roll call and approval of
minutes after a few corrections.
#3 Much discussion of a development on 70 acres located
South of Pickleville Parkway ensued. Chairman, Dan asked the developer to bring
a conceptual to the next meeting.
#4. Buttercup Acres discussion consisted of the plat not
containing the non-buildable lot information. The commission suggested that the
plat contain an overlay of the potential problems i.e. length of house on long
lots and location of covered canal parts. Approved with suggestions to be met.
#5. There was discussion and final approval for Waters Edge
phases 1, 5, & 6 as to how much parking was available due to changes in the
plat. They will need to come in again for approval having met the questions.
#6. Brian Hirschi presented his architectural, parking, and
landscape plans for his property. Water shares and roadway access were
discussed. Approval was given. Joey excused himself from voting as he is a
cousin.
#7. Seth Porter from Conestoga Ranch was at the meeting to
ask approval for phase 2. The Sanitation Dept. strongly suggested that they
move the dumpster area for the safety of vacationers.
#8. A conditional permit was given to New Horizons if they
have a 32’ ROW to Kimball Lane.
#9. Discussion for Psion’s plans for Condo’s off 1st
West and a large storage unit for 200 RV’s, boats, etc. off 3rd West. Approval
was given by a vote of 2-3. Reservations were still a consideration of a large
building in the middle Garden City. The setbacks will be 100 feet from 1st
South and 50’ setback from 3rd West.
#10. A Preliminary plat for Bear Lake Vista (originally Blue
Vista) was presented and after much discussion on roads and garbage location
the preliminary was approved upon conditions.
