UDOT On Logan Canyon Roads

FYI to all US-89 commuters and motorists.

The Logan Canyon Summit station is now manned 24-7 through the end of the winter season. At UDOT, we don't start plowing snow the second it begins to snow. The reason? We typically pre-treat the roadway with a brine solution about 48 hours in advance of the storm. This solution keeps the snow from forming ice that binds with the pavement.

We'll usually start plowing when there is about an inch accumulation, to make sure we don't plow off the brine before it can start working.

Additionally, in Logan Canyon we have many areas that are shaded during the winter and will form ice on the roadway no matter what we do to try and prevent it. So drive the speed limit or less.. Most crashes on the Logan Canyon are caused by speed too great for the conditions. So keep the speed down and everyone can arrive alive!
