Flooding Update-Bryce Nielson Emergency Manager for Rich County

Flooding Update

As we all know, the snow has continued to pile up. It appears that there was a warm-up this past weekend.  It will be short lived according to the forecast, so I hope you had time to move some snow and soak up the heat.  It may also be a good time to fill sandbags if you need them. Sandbags are available at the Garden City office Monday-Friday from 9 am to 5pm. There is no charge. Please only take what you need so there is plenty for everyone. They are not filled. There is plenty of sand at Heritage Park just east (all the way east) of the Pickleball Courts. Bring your own shovel, fill the bags about 2/3 full for best results.  Other sites are located around the county.  In past years, I have seen a lot of erosion on gravel roads in the hillside subdivisions when water running down the side of a road hits a uphill driveway.  Clean the culverts out or ditch around them.

I believe that when Bear Lake thaws, it will be the latest on record.  There is two feet of cold, clear ice under who knows how much snow on top which will insulate it.  Until the high snow in the Uinta’s starts to melt and the Bear River is diverted into the lake, the ice will remain.  That will be into May, so we can prepare for a cold Memorial Day weekend.  Forecasts for the month of April say the weather in Bear Lake will be cooler with slightly more precipitation than normal.

On that cheery note, just watch the weather, mitigate any flooding issues and be safe.
