Young Man Dies On Bear Lake Of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

From Miami Herald:

GARDEN CITY, Utah.  A young man has died of carbon monoxide poisoning after he inhaled too many toxic fumes during a boat trip on a Utah lake. Lucas Allyn, 22, was said to be lying near the exhaust pipe at the back of a boat as he helped his friends on and off the vessel while they went swimming and water skiing. Allyn's friends called 911 when they thought he had heatstroke on Saturday around 7.15pm.

Tragic: Lucas Allyn, 22, died of carbon monoxide poisoning on Saturday after he inhaled too many fumes during an boat ride on Bear Lake in Utah Deseret News reports that emergency responders met the boat at the dock at Bear Lake and some of his friends had already started trying to perform CPR on Allyn. Emergency responders continued to try to revive Allyn for over an hour before announcing the time of death.

The Utah State Medical Examiner later ruled that his cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning. The ruling comes as a surprise given the circumstances around Allyn's death, since the boat was running on an outdoor lake, meaning that the gas would have had plently of space to diseminate. Scene: Allyn was on the boat with friends at Bear Lake (pictured) on Saturday when they called 911 because they thought he had heat stroke 'Wildcard': His friends said Allyn (left, and at the left in right picture) dropped out of school but was hoping to reapply to college Carbon monoxide poisoning generally occurs in instances where a person is stuck inside a contained space where the substance is leaking, forcing them to inhale the toxic chemical instead of oxygen. Fun-loving: Allyn was said to be a loyal and trusting friend In this instance, the exhaust pipe lead came from the exterior motor of an older boat- as opposed to being contained in an interior cabin- and the victim was laying near the end of the pipe. One friend wrote a blog post in memory of his friend, who he called 'a wildcard' that 'became essentially, the brother I never had'. 'Lucas was that friend I could trust with anything, including my life. He was even going to be my best man (if I ever were to get married),' Raymond Howze wrote in the post. 'My family took him in almost a year ago when he moved out of his apartment and since then, our bond became even stronger.'Allyn had attended one year of college before dropping out, but at the time of his death, Mr. Howze was in the process of helping him reapply to school. 'In the end, he wanted to do whatever it took to get to the top,' Mr Howze wrote. 'I’ll always remember this quote from him: “You’re never penalized for over-dressing … just like you’re never penalized for being over-educated.” Lucas liked to live a life of excess, in all senses of the word. He even had dress shirts with his full name, Lucas Marcellus Allyn, embroidered on the collar.' - See more at: http://www.miaminewsday.com/national/12355-man-dies-of-carbon-monoxide-poisoning-while-boating-on-a-lake-because-he-was-sitting-too-close-to-the-exhaust-pipe.html#sthash.op0xMykk.dpuf"
