August 21, 2016. Last year the
Rich High School Drill team had to compete with all the other teams and
activities to use the gym for practices.
It was especially difficult during the two months before state wide competitions.
The girls often had to practice in the cafeteria which made it hard for them to
change drills from a small space to a larger space. Principal Rick Larsen said that he had
thought about a solution all summer and thought that if the Board would let him
“think outside the box” he had a solution.
He had talked with the owners of Majestic Ranch who own a
facility that has a large gym sized space not far from Rich High about it being the new practice area for the drill team. They agreed to let him use it for essentially
the cost of heating the building which is usually shut down in the winter. Because the school activities buses must meet
at Sage Junction, less than two minutes from the Ranch, it would be easy for
the drivers to bus the drill team members to and from the Ranch for less money
than having another activities bus making the whole project either the same
cost as last year or even less.
Ruth Ann Jarman, Drill Team Coach, said she was touched by
the concern Larsen showed in finding a great solution to the problem. She is very happy with the plans for this
year.
The Board thanked Principal Larsen for his diligence and told him to make sure it was economically fair for the Majestic Ranch as well as the district.
