Watch Out For After School App Cyberbullying

ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION

Over the past few weeks, the administration has been made aware of troubling electronic communications occurring between students. The concern ranges from a downloadable app. called “After School” which allows, and perhaps even encourages, students to make anonymous comments about other students to group specific Facebook accounts where inappropriate pictures, comments, and videos are posted. These are just representative samples which cause concern.

Rich School District does not wish to assert ourselves into the parent role of monitoring personal devices (we do intend to control, monitor, and regulate district devises to the extent practical), but feel that personal devices are the responsibility of the student and parent. However, the State of Utah has code which affects our responsibility to protect students from exposure while on school premises or when it affects a student’s performance/safety at school, regardless of where or when it may happen. (Utah Code Ann. 53A-11-904).

If you wish to view Rich School District policy regarding “cyberbullying” or “electronic communication devices”, you can access the respective policies, 510 and 511, from the district home page.

We encourage parents to be involved in monitoring any and all electronic devices which are accessed and used by your child.
