“Lights On” Tree-Trimming Tradition Marks its 50th year

GARDEN CITY, Utah; December 1, 2022 — Students from North Rich Elementary School shared in a 50-year community tradition, creating handmade ornaments for Zions Bank’s Christmas tree and receiving a cash donation to their school in return. Throughout Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, more than 3,000 elementary school students are participating in the annual “Lights On” event by making festive decorations to brighten Zions Bank branches.

North Rich students created 120 handmade ornaments for Zions Bank’s Garden City branch. In return, Zions Bank presented a donation of $100 to the school.

The public is invited to visit the branch, located at 557 N. Bear Lake Blvd., and see the decorated tree on display through the holidays.

“While this holiday tradition spans a half-century, our commitment to our communities goes back to our founding in 1873,” said Steve Allred, manager at Zions Bank’s Garden City branch. “It’s a great way for us to give to our local schools as a thank-you for their festive ornaments.”

This year, 64 schools are taking part in Zions Bank’s “Lights On” holiday celebration. In addition, a number of Zions branches have invited students from special-needs classes and Title 1 schools to decorate the trees in their lobbies. Zions Bank has been inviting students to participate in this annual holiday event for 50 years.

4-H Giving Project

The Bear Country 4-H Club has decided that for Christmas this year they would like to give Christmas to a family in need.

After working with those who know we have found a family.

The kids have decided that they would like to try and pay a month worth of rent for this family. They are working on earning money and have all agreed to give up the cost of their favorite gift and have that money go towards their goal.

If anyone would like to help them reach this goal please contact Tiffany Webb Nelson, Ben Weston, Julie Jackson Bizios, Stephanie Willis, or myself.

We understand that this time of year can be hard for many, so any help is appreciated. The smallest amount adds up.

The kids are excited to do this and have other ideas in the works.

Thank you in advance for your support and help.

Merry Christmas!

Obituary - Glade Shurtleff Booth

Glade Shurtleff Booth  1941 ~ 2022
Glade Shurtleff Booth, 80, passed away on November 27, 2022, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Glade was born in Logan, Utah, on December 25, 1941, to Bryan Lloyd Booth and Darleen Shurtleff. He was raised with his four sisters on a small farm in Garden City, Rich County, Utah. Glade participated in Boy Scouts, Future Farmers of America, a dance band, football, and wrestling. He graduated from Fielding High School in 1960 and served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Austrian Mission from 1961 to 1963 where he learned German, a language he loved his whole life. After returning home from his mission, he married his high-school sweetheart, Linda Alaire Hart, in the Logan Utah Temple on December 20, 1963. Together they raised six children. During their married life, Glade and Linda lived briefly in Logan; in Bloomington, Idaho; seven years in Phoenix, Arizona; and 16 years in Sandy, Utah. They have lived in Murray, Utah, for the last 25 years.

Before his mission, Glade participated in ROTC and received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy. He turned down the appointment to serve his mission and afterward studied finance and accounting for a few years at Brigham Young University and Utah State University. He was self-employed as an income tax, real estate, and business consultant. Glade loved reading, hunting, fishing, and watching football and Gunsmoke.

Glade began struggling with depression on his mission, and the frequency and severity of his depressive episodes increased to where they became disabling later in his life. Mental health challenges plagued him his entire adult life. He battled to keep a positive outlook and to find ways to contribute. Despite his own health and financial challenges, Glade often reached out to help and encourage others. He loved his family and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In 2017, Glade suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on one side and bound to a wheelchair. He lived the last five years in a care and rehabilitation center where he relished visits from his family members and his dear wife. He always lit up when Linda visited, and greeted her with "Hello, Beautiful" to the very end. His family appreciates the care provided by medical personnel and staff at the Life Care Center of Salt Lake.

Glade was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife and his four sisters and their spouses: Dee Ann Price (Charles); Carmen Madsen (Michael); Denise Haddock (Kent); and Marcene Littledike (Dan). He is also survived by his six children and their spouses: Nancy Bell (Bryan); Tonya Bryner; Bryan Hart Booth (Paula Olschewski); Clinton Robert Booth (Rebecca Lucas); Colin Patrick Booth (Jennette Jay); and Becky Joan Subramanian (Daniel). Glade and Linda have 28 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 8, 2022, at 6180 South Glen Oaks Street (850 East) in Murray, Utah. A visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 -10:45 am.
