Brian was born on November 8th, 1967 to Dorothy and Wesley Tingey. He was raised alongside his brothers and sisters, Shawn, Darrin, Sharilyn, Karilee, Alisa, and Tylen, on the family ranch in Woodruff, Utah. Brian learned to work hard at a very young age. He and his siblings spent many hours working on the ranch and moving sprinkler pipe, sometimes starting at 4:30 in the morning before school, and again well into the evening hours. Throughout his teenage years, he worked for Deseret Land and Livestock during the summers. He was happy there was a “quitting time,” a distinct difference from working for his dad. From a very young age, Brian could outwork most grown men. That work ethic remained with him throughout the rest of his life.
As a young man, he enjoyed skiing at Beaver Mountain and competing in high school sports. He excelled in basketball and also played football and ran track. He was a member of the first graduating class from Rich High School in 1986, after which he studied for a year at Dixie College. He then served a 2-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Barcelona, Spain.
Upon Brian’s return from his mission, he studied Math Education at Utah State University where he met MaryAnn Siggard in a math class. They married in 1992 in the Logan, Utah Temple and graduated with their Bachelor’s Degrees in 1994. Brian would later earn a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from Walden University. He began his teaching career in Coalville, Utah, where he also coached basketball and track.
Between 1994 and 2005 Brian and MaryAnn welcomed 5 children into the world;
Katelyn, Kyler, Sara, Damon, and Melayna. In the summer of 2002, they moved their family to Stuttgart, Germany for a 2-year adventure where Brian began teaching for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools. They loved it so much they decided to stay. Throughout Brian’s 22 years of teaching in Germany, he taught Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and PE at Patch and Stuttgart High Schools. His love for competition and sports led him to coach basketball, softball, track, and golf over the years. He also served as the Athletic Director for his school from 2009-2016. He taught all 5 of his children AP Calculus and coached Katelyn and Sara in softball. He led the Patch High School softball team to multiple DODDS European Championships. Brian influenced thousands of students over the years with his commitment to excellence and desire to help his students achieve their highest potential. His love for education did not stop with his career. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed listening to podcasts discussing topics such as history, economics, and philosophy.
Brian and MaryAnn shared many adventures over their 32 years of friendship and marriage. They visited 28 different countries. Throughout their travels, they loved sightseeing, attending concerts and musicals, and high-adventure activities. In the last three years, Brian and MaryAnn’s favorite activity has been exploring the beautiful bike trails all over Europe on their e-bikes. Brian also enjoyed golfing with friends and spending time with his family. He shared his love of learning, skiing, ping-pong, adventure, sports, and dad jokes with his children. He worked hard to support them in their interests, talents, and goals. He made each of them feel seen, heard, and loved.
Brian is deeply missed by his family, friends, and past students. He was predeceased by his father, Wesley Robert Tingey. He is survived by his mother, wife, children, and three grandchildren, Nora, Neo, and Ender.
A funeral service for Brian will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 15, 2024, at the Woodruff LDS Chapel, 180 South Main Street, Woodruff, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:00 to 10:30 am at the church. The interment will be at the Logan City Cemetery at 4:00 pm.
