Rich County Commission Notes for March 12th

10:00 Call to order and flag ceremony

10:00 Travis Hobbs, Rich County Fire Warden, presented his yearly update to the Commission. There were 13 wildfires in Rich County, the largest was 1,3411 acres of which 900 acres were on BLM land and 400 acres on private land. The cost was $1 million dollars.

Some of the trucks broke down but they are getting fixed. There are 19 certified red card holders for call outs when there is a fire. Woodruff has 1, Randolph has 1, Laketown has 1, and Garden City has 14. Thanks to all of the volunteers for protecting our communities.

Travis is still working on the access from Little Switzerland to the Idaho border for fire suppression and the other fire break lines which were done in past years.

He mentioned the House Bill which was just passed requiring homes in wildfire areas to have an additional tax. He doesn’t know how this will affect Rich County homes at this time. (I will now put in a plug for our local entrepreneur, Bryce Huefner and his home fire suppression units).

There was another suggestion for improving the needed financials for fire suppression and that was hiring out the vehicles to other agencies. Last year having one of the trucks in Southern Utah brought the county $34k in revenue. Of course there were expenses.

Travis is looking to the future and trying to stay up on all the new regulations. He wants to encourage more volunteers.

Pam Cornia, from the Republican Central Committee, discussed the possibility of restructuring the lines of the precinct to get better input for local areas.

An adjustment to a STR business license was discussed and approved.

Kim Wilson, Rich County Assessor, had several exemption applications to discuss.

Printer purchase for ballots was discussed and repair of compactor was approved.
