Sports And Activity Fees To Increase

RANDOLPH, Utah. May 17, 2017.  The Audit Committee looked at activity fee increases which will increase by $10 at the high school and sport fees will be raised by $20 per sport which will mean that each student will pay $50 per sport.   Richard Clark, Administrator, said the district had to subsidize sports this year to cover a $25,000 shortfall.

“It is more costly to have kids in sports than other schools in Utah because we have so much travelling and parents often travel to games and need motels.  It is just expensive to be in sports in Rich County,” said Dale Lamborn.

Summer Camps are also expensive, for example one camp is $280 per team plus the cost of uniforms and lodging.

UHSAA rules say that participation in summer camps cannot be basis for choice on team, but the kids who do not go do not get the skill sets needed to be on teams.  The district does not  pay a stipend to coaches for camp but transportation is paid.  Coaches are paid out of fees.

Lamborn said, “A few years we battled the summer camp problem, now some coaches donate time and some are paid.  Costs vary between sports.”  Scott Tolentino asked who was liable for the student at the camp and was told that personal injury does not cover the students at camp.

There will be a music camp this year for the first time, and it will follow the same rules required of summer camps.

The School Board praised the Annie production by the Rich Middle School.  They agreed they need new microphones  for productions and they would look into that.
