The Garden City Library received a grant in September through the “Children and Teen Book Enhancement Project” provided by the state library.
Cathie Rasmussen, the director of the Garden City Library, applied for the grant in August and was chosen by a committee to receive the grant. Rasmussen was able to choose from book lists for early readers, juvenile and young adult fiction and nonfiction. The Garden City Library was awarded 115 new books from the various lists. The grant was fulfilled by Baker & Tayler with many books from current and “in demand” series’ as well as graphic novels and early chapter books. The library is grateful for the opportunity to receive these much needed items that will truly “enhance” the services they provide the community.
Future events at the Garden City Library include a Pizza /Marathon Reading kick-off party for preschoolers through 8th graders. The party will be held during regular library hours on November 3rd. Children are encouraged to bring pillows and blankets and settle in for a reading marathon.
The marathon begins November 1st and will continue through the month of November and is in conjunction with the “25th Annual Reading Marathon” in Salt Lake sponsored by KUED. Our local director applied for a mini grant through KUED and the U of U and received funds to host the kick-off party and purchase prizes for the month long event. Mini-grants were issued for libraries in rural communities more than 100 miles from Salt Lake City. The library requests that parents view the “event” on the library’s Facebook page to aid the library in purchasing party items and prizes. Reading logs can be picked up at the library beginning November 1st.
