Rich County Commission possible change from 3-5 members

This initiative is for all of Rich County. We need at least 600 yes votes by April 1st to move forward for this to be on the Nov. Ballot.

This is a public notice about a referendum to change the number of County Commissioner’s from 3 to 5 in this year’s election.  In order to do that a few things have to happen.

1.       Majority of the elected precinct delegates need to vote for the change

2.      Signatures from 35% of the registered county voters have to be collected and submitted to the county clerk to get this referendum on the November ballot.

3.      The majority of voters in Rich County have to vote for the referendum.

Here is a list of the reasons for voting for 5 Commissioners.

  • Increased Representation
    • Diverse Perspectives: More commissioners can represent a wider range of community interests and demographics.
    • Localized Governance: With five commissioners, each commissioner can be assigned to focus on specific county and precincts projects, ensuring that local issues are addressed more effectively.
  • Enhanced Decision-Making
    • Collaborative Process: A larger board can facilitate more discussion and collaboration, leading to better-informed decisions.
    • Checks and Balances: More members can reduce the risk of unilateral decisions, promoting accountability within the commission.
  • Improved Oversight
    • Broader Oversight: Five commissioners can manage the complexities of county operations more efficiently, especially when the population continues to grow.
    • Specialization: Commissioners can specialize in different areas, budgets, public safety, sanitation, roads, ordinances, general services, etc.
  • Voter Engagement
    • More Choices: Voters can have more options in elections, which can increase voter turnout and engagement in local government.
    • Tailored Representation: With district-based elections, residents may feel more connected to their representatives, fostering a better sense of community involvement.
    • A requirement for five commissioners can help to ensure fair representation across the county
    • Transitioning from three to five county commissioners can lead to more representation, accountability, and a more effective local government, ultimately benefiting the community as a whole.

Please email 1 if you agree or 6 if you disagree within 2 weeks with this proposal so the delegation will know if there is enough support to gather the required signatures and submit the reformation request to the clerk.
