Veteran's Day

I read an article this week detailing the service end of people who didn't wear a uniform, but were the back up builders of engines, parts, building maintenance and just wanted to give a shout out to them.

Also, the Veteran's Memorial on Main Street in Garden City is a sweet reminder of those from our community who have served in wars. 

Veterans Day is on November 11th every year to honor all who have served in the U.S. military. The date is historically significant because it marks the anniversary of the end of World War I at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918. While there was a temporary period when the date was moved, it was permanently returned to November 11 in 1978. 

  • Historical significance: 
    The holiday originated as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I, which was signed at the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month". 
  • Official name change: 
    In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor veterans of all wars. 
  • Date permanence: 
    A 1968 law temporarily moved the holiday to the fourth Monday in October, but due to public confusion and backlash, President Gerald Ford signed a new law in 1975 that returned the observance to November 11 starting in 1978.
